Wunderwall poster

The giraffe travelled in a backpack

A chance sighting of a giraffe passing by the window provided this Wunderwall with its curious title. The Wunderwall was created as part of my residency at Toos Neger Studio in the winter of 2012/2013 in Dordrecht, a city in the south of the Netherlands.

Over almost four months, I photographed extensively in Dordrecht and travelled to other Dutch cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Den Haag and other small towns and villages in the Netherlands.

The resulting images were used in this Wunderwall, the first to feature images from one country exclusively. As a result, it’s a kind of portrait from a small slice of time.

It was also the first to have a Dutch name: De giraffe reisde in een rugzak. It featured 578 images, each measuring 15 x 20 cm. The resulting installation soared to a height of  6.5 metres and was 3.8 metres wide. It was show at SBK Gallery in Dordrecht in January and February 2013.
